2025 Amagai Kendo Seminar for Youth and Coaches

Kendo Kai Den Haag will host a special seminar led by Amagai Mizuki sensei, a renowned instructor from one of Japan’s top youth kendo dojos.

Rather than focusing on winning or losing, the seminar emphasizes personal growth through kendo, as well as the importance of teamwork and lasting friendships. While technical instruction will be provided, the main goal is to explore—together with Japanese sensei—how we can help children enjoy kendo and continue practicing it for many years to come.

Ibaraki Junior Kendo Team

Founded in 1980, the Ibaraki Junior Kendo Team has an outstanding competitive record. The team has won the prestigious Mito Tournament twice, the All Japan Dojo Youth Tournament elementary school division team title once and individual title twice, and the junior high school division team title three times and individual title three times. They have also claimed the All Japan Dojo Tournament title three times, and three alumni have competed in the All Japan Championship.

The current dojo was re-established under the leadership of Amagai Masumi Sensei, and has gained national recognition in just a few years. While many strong dojos in Japan take a strict, almost Spartan approach—sometimes at the cost of children’s mental well-being—Amagai Sensei and his team are different. They start with play, carefully guiding children through each developmental stage without pushing them beyond their limits.

This supportive and nurturing approach has led to remarkable success: last year, the girls’ team became national champions. The dojo is also known for producing many talented and respected competitors, not just strong in skill but also in character.
